Ode to Millennials

Despite the impending doom that haunts behind,

The Millennials stayed optimistic.

I often envied them.

The world was not meant for the Millennials,

But they decided to live anyways.

Cool brimmed hats and long scarves,

Ripped skinny jeans and Blunderstone boots,

Frappuccino and iPhone 6s,

Washed out folk songs and slam poetry.

Dope in every way possible.

Cool Calm Collected,

Snapbacks,

Plaid shirts with a cardigan.

Although in debt from student loans,

They still chose to voice their opinions through consumerism.

BuzzFeed quizzes and MySpace,

Rae Dunn furniture and knickknacks,

Crooks and Castles,

To an extent- Supreme.

Brands to represent their personalities,

Rebranded to us today.

Ukeleles,

Mustaches,

Manbuns,

Domo.

I wanted it all, because I looked up to them.

It’s easy to look back and laugh,

But you can’t deny their outlook in life.

The world was made for Boomers,

The Xers were nihilists just like us.

But the Millennials didn’t care.

They carved their way into culture,

Sometimes on good faith, sometimes through gentrification.

The days when the sun kissed their cool sunglasses and reflected their souls

Sunshine and rainbows appeared through every plane of light.

Souls that were so pure of hope,

Determination running down in every vein,

The Millennials made the world colourful,

Even if it was just for a few decades.

May the Millennials be reminded of their hope,

Whenever they get stuck in traffic,

Whenever they pick up the kids from school,

Whenever they are running late for an appointment,

Whenever they have to put back frozen pizza at the cashier,

Whenever they catch a cold,

Whenever they get a speeding ticket,

Whenever they drink,

Whenever they cry,

Whenever they look up at the stars,

Whenever they pray,

Whenever they lose.

Whenever they win.
